If you have been on the internet for some time, you’ve probably seen more than your fair share of banner ads. These small rectangular advertisements are on all sorts of websites and will vary in appearance and subject matter. But they all do the same thing, if you click on them, they will take you to an advertisers website.
But how do they work and why are they there?
Just so you know a banner ad is simply a special type of hypertext link. A bit of HTML code instructs a web server to bring up a particular web page when a user clicks a certain piece of text. So instead of just a link with plain old text a banner ad is displayed as a box containing graphics ( I have three banner ads up top)
Advertising with Banners
There are three things you can do if you want to get into banner advertising, you can:
- Arrange to display other people’s banner ads on your site in exchange for them displaying your banner ads. (Trading)
- You can pay other publisher sites to post your banner ads
- Or pay an organization, usually a banner network like DoubleClick to post the banner on a number of publisher sites.
Now before you dive head first into banner advertising you need to prepare and make sure you are ready for it. So here are 4 things you should consider before getting into banner banner advertising.
Do you have a sales funnel that you are confident in?
The important thing is the sales funnel they see after clicking on your banner ad.
Banner advertising, if you do it the way I’m going to show you, will send you more traffic than you can imagine, but you have to have a way to handle all of the traffic that will come your way and put it to good use. The thing is if you don’t have a system in place to actually captilalize on all of the traffic it wont matter if you are getting thousands of visitors a day or one visitor a day, you won’t run a profitable banner ad campaign. You need to have a system in place to monetize the traffic your getting to your banner ad. And the most effective way is with a lead capture page that gets your prospects contact information like their name and email address. That way you can market to them over and over again. Your capture page will send them into your sales funnel where you make your sales.
By the way, if you are not familiar with a lot of the terms I have mentioned so far I would pick up a copy of Mike Dillard’s MLM Traffic Formula right now.
Who is your target market?
The next thing you need to do is get into your ideal customer’s shoes. Any professional marketer will tell you that having the perfect product to sell isn’t the end all be all, you still need the perfect market for that product as well. There is no point in having the best thing since sliced bread if you have no idea who you are going to sell it to. You need to know what it is that your target market wants. What are their wants, needs, and desires? What problems do they have that need to be solved. Where do they hang out?
Call To Action
Now that you found your market and and you know what your ideal customers are, you need to know what will make them take action, click on your ad, and sign up on your capture page and buy your products. By now you would have an idea of what motivates your target market but you also want to convey that in your banner ad. You can offer something of value like a free report or maybe a 7 day bootcamp that will solve a problem that is on the top of their minds. Whatever it is you are offering, before you start a banner ad campaign you need to know the message that you are going to convey that will make it close to impossible for your customers to ignore you.
Do you have proof?
So you have your sales funnel ready to go, you know who are your ideal customers, and you also have a message that will motivate them.
The next and final item on your checklist is to TEST,TEST, and TEST some more. You might have the first three things finished, but now you need to test those three elements of your marketing funnel.
You need to find another medium that allows you to do so affordably and quickily. I’m not going to go over the countless number of ways to drive traffic which would be beyond the scope of this article. The point is you need to drive traffic to you sales funnel to see if you are targeting the right market, if your message is compelling enough to get them into your sales funnel and that your sales funnel does it’s job overall. You don’t want to just go out and find a website to host your banner ad without testing your entire marketing funnel.
Well there you go, this should give you an idea of what to do before going on to the next step, which would be to find a suitable website to host your banner ad, which I will go over at a later date. Talk to you soon…
